Vestibular Autorotation Test (VAT)

Many Primary Care physicians seek a diagnostic screening tool to accurately identify the source of dizziness, vertigo, and/or balance disorders. To pinpoint the cause of these disorders, we need a tool to help us examine the vestibular system. Statistically speaking 85% of dizziness compalints are caused by inner ear disturbances. Therefore the vestibular system should be the first place to examine.

VAT offers a complete and easy-to-use screening tool to test for correct functioning of the vestibulo-ocular reflex. The most comprehensive approach from a clinical standpoint is to employ the Vestibular Autoration Test (VAT) to examine the vestibular system. This test has been performed for more than twenty years.

The inner ear sends signals about head movement to the brain, causing signals to be sent to the muscles of the eyes via the vestibulo-ocular reflx (VOR). For every head movement in one direction, there is eye movement in the opposite direction. With VAT, the examiner utilizes small adhesive electrodes to record eye movmements while the head is moving at varios speeds. The VAT tests the range of natural, everyday motion, and evaluates both the horizontal and vertical inner ear systems.

Other types of vestibular testing only address the horizontal semicurcircular canals and exclude the superior and anterior vertical canals. The VAT is clinically superior to those other tests because it is designed to test them all. This eliminates the chances of missing a vestibular issue.

Your patient's exam will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist, who dictates a report. You will then receive your results within 48 to 72 hours.
